The most advantageous Joomla 1.6

Joomla, Drupal and WordPress together make the big trio of CMS applications. W3Techs statistics says Joomla holds 11% of the CMS market and it powers 2% of the web.

Many sites like Citibank, GE, eBay etc. use Joomla for their front facing and internal sites. The main reason to use Joomla 1.6 was to make the package more user-friendly and efficient.

The previous version Joomla 1.5 was released 3 years ago and the new version has come out now after a lot of effort. Joomla team has planned to adapt a six-month release strategy in the future so that the users could avoid waiting long for updates.

We have explored amply into the new features and improvements offered in Joomla 1.6:

The ACL vantage – The User Manager feature has been replaced with new Access    Control List (ACL) that will let administrators have more control while creating user groups and offering user permissions to the various aspects of a site. Since Joomla now builds an ACL into the system instead of relying on third party extensions is a great advantage for it.

Attractive updates

Now Joomla has a built-in plugin manager and auto-update tool similar to that of WordPress. This is going to be highly advantageous for the administrators who have many site with too many extensions to manage.

Attractive ‘Template styles’: Good bye to trouble! Making changes to template is much easier now. With the new template styles, designers can make variations of the same template that can be applied to the required specific sections or pages of a website.

Play Multiple! Package Installation Feature – This feature is a great advantage for web developers who offer a number of interconnected extensions. Basically it lets him to create a single package that will install multiple extensions at the same time.

Be meticulous! Template and Layout Overrides Along with the template styles now there is facility to do layout overrides to change the most minute aspects of a website, such as menus or modules.

Media Manager-Better than before – The content manager is much better than before. It supports multiple file uploads.

Bid goodbye to sections– No more sections! Be ready to enjoy the ‘categories’ advantage! This lets you create unlimited subcategories for ultimate hierarchy and taxonomy control.

However Joomla still stays behind when compare to WordPress’ ease-of-use advantage. But as a CMS it can be significantly powerful. The ACL is a great feature for large scale websites with plenty of users. And for designers the addition of template styles and layout overrides would make customizing and changing smaller aspects of a page or site faster. For end users there are a lot advantages, but on our local host the software seems faster and brisker than an identical Joomla 1.5 instance.
